If you are a woman in need of an oil that will be beneficial to your skin not just the body but also the face, try grape seed oil.  And the bonus is, it does not cost you the bomb.

Some commercial products  may add grape seed oil to their creams, lotions, gels etc., but do you know that it is way cheaper and more effective to use it on its own?

This oil is derived from it's nutrient-rich grape seeds and these are what it possesses:

  • It is loaded with antioxidants and OPCs, which is short for "oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes.(You don't need to remember the full name. Just know that is is good for your skin)
  • It has anti-aging benefits.
  • It keeps skin supple and even toned.
  • It keeps your skin hydrated.
  • It keeps your skin moisturised.

Excellent Moisturiser for dry skin

Sebum that is produced by our skin hydrates our skin.  Oils actually mimics sebum but dry skin is lacking in sebum and therefore, applying plain grape seed oil once or twice a day can effectively address skin dryness.

The upside of people who have oily or combination skin like myself can keep dryness and wrinkles at bay a little longer but the downside is excessive sebum productions will cause blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and acne.

You can apply grape seed oil to oily skin but make sure that your face is thoroughly cleansed.  Apply very sparingly on your face, avoiding the T-zone  and preferably during the night before going to bed.  Gently rub the oil into your face until it is absorbed.  There is no oily residue or sticky feel.  Your skin will feel soft and smooth to the touch.

What if grape seed oil is not suitable for your face?

If you have an adverse effect from using this oil on your face, you may reserve it for your body instead.  Apply the oil especially on the exposed to sunlight areas such as your neck, arms and legs.  Even though your face may be oily, the rest of your body still needs moisture.

Suitable for scars

If you have blemishes, acne scars or scars sustained from injuries and surgeries, massage a drop of  grape seed oil on these areas daily after showering to keep it supple.

Over time, the discoloration may fade and the blemishes and scars may be less visible.

Anti-Aging
We cannot escape from being exposed to free radicals as it is all around us, in the environment as well as in the processed foods that we eat.

These factors can cause premature aging of our skin.  As grape seed oil has high anti-oxidants,  pigmentations, wrinkles, fine lines and dryness can be kept at bay with daily use.

Improved Skin Tone

Vitamin C has been confirmed to have whitening properties for our skin.  However, grape seed oil is much more superior in keeping your skin tone even.   And due to high demand, commercial Vitamin C serums are very expensive.  In terms of cost and benefits, grape seed oil is the better choice.

How much does grape seed oil cost and other uses?

In Malaysia, you can buy a 500 ml bottle of grape seed oil for less that RM20.  Serums or creams can easily cost you 10 to 15 times more and at 30 ml a jar,  it may last you maybe a month or two depending on the condition of your skin and the size of your face. Yes, size does matter.

I have a round face, so I have more surface area to cover.(with a straight face)
If you have a oval shaped face, perhaps  a 30 ml bottle may stretch to two and a half months.

Since 500 ml of grape seed oil can last you for quite a while, you might as well,

  • add it to your salad as a dressing or
  • use it to pan fry meat, chicken or
  • even use it for grilling or
  • baking or
  • deep frying.
  • add sugar to make a face and body scrub.
  • add lemon juice to make a hydrating face mask.
  • add to hair as a mask.
  • add to your current face cream for added benefits.
  • Grape seed oil is also an excellent eye and face makeup remover.  Just a 1 to 2 drops of it can wipe your makeup clean.
  • as a massage oil for your whole body.

Is there any other serums or creams that would give you this much mileage?

I have been using a well known brand eye makeup remover.  They are sold at RM15.90 for a 110ml bottle and frankly it does not work that well to remove all the mascara.  So grape seed oil "dissolves" that issue for me perfectly.

Personal experience

500 ml of Grape Seed Oil Photo credit:Philo Yan

Recently, my sister had an outbreak of pimples and she found that grape seed oil has helped her skin to clear up.  The blemishes have also quickly healed.  I met up with her recently and I can see that her skin has definitely improved.

I only started using the grape seed oil for the past week on my face and arms every night.  I observed that my skin tone has become clearer and more supple.  And my arms which have begun to feel dry are well hydrated again.

So far, I did not experience any breakouts even though I have put  roughly 3 to 4 drops on my whole face.  Like I said, I have more face to cover.

The color and texture of grape seed oil is slightly lighter than olive oil and it smells very faintly of crushed seeds.

Care to give it a try?  For starters, get a small bottle and please let me know if it works for your skin.

TipFor ease in dispensing the oil, store some in a  smaller glass container or a used lotion bottle that has a pump head.

    1. Good day Anonymous.

I responded to you as your question is a valid one eventhough you have chosen to ask anonymously.

If you are residing in Malaysia, you can easily buy it from any shopping malls. Personally, I obtain it from Jusco or Aeon as it is now known.

Thank you for taking the time to comment and visiting.

    1. It's the same.A carrier oil is a vegetable oil derived from the fatty portion of a plant, usually from the seeds, kernels or the nuts.

But just to let you know organic and cold pressed is the best if you want to have the real stuff.

Processing Method: Shop for carrier oils that have been cold pressed or cold expeller pressed. This indicates that the oil has been pressed from the fatty portions of the botanical without the use of added heat. The process can still generate heat due to the friction of the method, but cold expeller pressed oils are processed under conditions that keep the heat to a minimum. Oils that simply say expeller pressed have not been processed to maintain low heat levels. When oils are processed without cool conditions, the high temperature degree and duration of the processing method can harm the fragile nutrients in the oil.

Nutrients: Carrier oils can contain fat soluble vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Seabuckthorn Berry Oil, for instance, has such a high ratio of beta carotene that the oil is orange and is amongst the most vivid of oils. Oils that naturally contain tocopherols (Vitamin E) act as anti-oxidants which are both helpful to the skin and generally help extend the shelf life of the oil.

Essential Fatty Acids: Essential Fatty Acids are fatty acids that our bodies cannot manufacture and need to get from our diets. When applied topically, they are very nourishing to our skin. Carrier oils vary in their ratio and specific EFAs that they contain. EFAs are a benefit to the skin, but they also can make an oil more fragile and prone to quicker rancidity. See the Essential Fatty Acids article for more information.

Price: Carrier oils can vary greatly in price based on several factors: The botanical it's made from, how it was processed, if it's organic, the quantity that you're purchasing, and the source that you're purchasing it from.

Organic: Organic carrier oils generally cost more than conventional oils. When purchasing organic carrier oils, verify if the oil is certified.

Color: Color doesn't always matter when selecting a carrier oil for simple blends, but it can matter if you are making more elaborate recipes where the color of your final product is important to you.

Aroma: The aroma of some carrier oils can compete or conflict with the aroma of the essential oils in your desired blend.

Viscosity: Viscosity is a measurement of the resistance of a liquid to movement and flow. For our purposes in comparing carrier oils, I keep things simple by defining them as having a "thin," "medium" or "thick" viscosity.

Absorption/Feel: This is a rather subjective evaluation of how thoroughly and quickly an oil penetrates the skin, and if it makes the skin feel oily after application.

Shelf Life: Carrier oils vary in how long they last before oxidizing and becoming rancid. When purchasing carrier oils, estimate the quantity of oil that you think you'll use within the lifetime of the oil. See the Carrier Oils and Rancidity section of this article for information on shelf life and rancidity.

  6. Hi, may I know your sister's skin type? Because I have oily T-zone and normal-dry cheeks but both area have some pimples and scars, I wish to apply the grapeseed oil to both but was in dilemma :(

And may I know if you're still continuing the oil on your face? How is the progress?

    Thanks! :)

    1. My sister has normal to dry skin. And her pimples were mostly red spots. You could try a drop or two first on small areas of your skin. If the condition of your skin does not become oily, you can use your judgement to apply a little more. Avoid applying on pimples if it is with pus or the T-Zone.
I would suggest that if you can, use a pimple cream to dry up the spots. Once it is cleared, then you could apply the grapeseed oil but sparingly.

I use two drops on my neck and a little on my eye area because it is drier and so far, no issue.

      Good Luck!
